Spec Midea U 12,000 BTU U-Shaped Window AC (MAW12V1UWT) Whynter ARC-1230WNH NEX Inverter Portable AC with Heat Photo Our score SCORE 7.5 / 10 SCORE 6.5 / 10 Our take The biggest current U, not recalled and rated CEER 15. We found no verified listing for it, and a 12,000 BTU unit on a shared 115V circuit deserves a check of what else is on that outlet. The portable we'd buy: hose-in-hose inverter, 12,000 BTU SACC, a published CEER of 14.2 and a heat pump. The catch is the mail-in warranty and an authorized-dealer requirement. Type U-shaped window Portable Cooling (DOE / SACC) 12,000 BTU 12,000 BTU CEER 15best 14.2 Inverter Yes Yes Heat mode None Heat pump Noise, lowest setting (maker figure) n/a 42.5 dBA Window width, min n/a 28 in Window width, max n/a 82 in Warranty n/a 1 yr ENERGY STAR Yes No Watch out for CPSC recall #25320 (June 2025) covers the 8,000-12,000 BTU V1QWT, AV1QWT, W1QWT and U1QWT Midea U models over mold from pooled water. Read the suffix on the listing and again on the box label. The recalled 12,000 BTU models are MAW12V1QWT, MAW12AV1QWT, MAW12W1QWT and MAW12U1QWT. Warranty is 1 year plus 3 years on the compressor, but service is mail-in, only within the 48 contiguous states, needs an authorized Whynter dealer, and you pay return freight after month two. Portable ACs are excluded from ENERGY STAR's room AC program. ARC-1230WN and ARC-1230WN2 are similar inverter models with no heat.
